Mil Guitarras para Víctor Jara is held annually in Santiago, Chile. This year Dr. David Spenar will host our own Mil Guitarras event right here in San Antonio to honor Víctor's memory AND to encourage the U.S. government to extradite his assassin to face justice in Chile. Spear will be joined by renowned singer-songwriters, San Antonio's own Tish Hinojosa and Puerto Rico's Lourdes Pérez in leading a solidarity choir to honor the great Chilean songwriter Victor Jara. Victor's songs of love, friendship, social justice, and peace are still sung throughout the world over forty years after his assassination during the 1973 coup that overthrew the democratically-elected government of Dr. Salvador Allende.

This is a participatory activity that anyone can attend on September 17 If you'd like to sing along in the official "choir" with Tish and Lourdes, you may come to a couple of rehearsals before the event to practice the songs. This year, we'll be singing songs from his album Pongo en tus manos abiertas, which you can listen to online at https://youtu.be/7stPp7P_ZoY.

If you're interested in participating in Mil Guitarras para Víctor Jara, send an email to dspener@trinity.edu in addition to responding to this invitation.

Alwan, in conjunction with "Womens Voices: A Festival Across Genres and Traditions," is pleased to welcome back Lebanese singer May Nasr to her New York "home" and to present acclaimed singer-songwriter Lourdes Pérez in their first ever joint appearance in New York, performing (in both Arabic and Spanish) each other's songs of justice, freedom and love.
